.Remembering Dr. Taddesse Ebba!

“A brilliant intellectual, a Ph.D scholar; a revolutionary freedom fighter; a founding member of the Oromo Liberation Front; a leader with immense humility, dedication and knowledge; a patient, gentle and profound speaker!”

Once when I was a teenager, I was sitting in the offices of the Oromo Liberation Front in Washington D.C. While I sat in a conference room, I noticed on the table new, unwrapped copies of the book  “Oromia: an Introduction to the History of the Oromo People” by Gadaa Melba, which was first published in 1980 in Finfinnee (underground). I vividly remember reading this book, from front to back, rarely pausing. It is a monumental publication—the very first text that laid down the history of the Oromo people, that unequivocally refuted harmful myths and false narratives about our origins, identity, culture, history and civilization. The influence of this text on the political consciousness of several generations and on the liberation struggle of the Oromo people is immeasurable.

Dr Taddasa Ebba was written abook of the legends of oromo historical analiyies.

“Gadaa Melbaa” is a pseudonym, so I was very curious about who Gadaa Melba was. On this day, Dr. Taddesse Ebba (Jaal Fido) was also sitting with me in the conference room. We had been discussing various issues on the Oromo national struggle—although I was just a teenager and we were generations apart, he was always so incredibly kind and he always took time to encourage me, to mentor and to share stories about his incredible experiences as a political prisoner and OLF leader and his immense knowledge. I took one of the copies of the book into my hand and said to him, “I can’t believe we still don’t know who Gadaa Melba is. I wish we knew so that we could tell him thank you.” Dr. Taddessee looked at me, smiled and softly laughed, and paused. He then said, “Well, you can tell him right now because it is me.”

I was so thrilled and amazed at the coincidence. And while I was shocked about this reveal, a part of me was not surprised that Dr. Taddesse was Gadaa Melba. He is a brilliant intellectual, a Ph.D scholar; a revolutionary freedom fighter; a founding member of the Oromo Liberation Front; a leader with immense humility, dedication and knowledge; a patient, gentle and profound speaker. So there should be no surprise that he is also the author of the first groundbreaking historical publication that helped lift the voices and existence of the Oromo people onto the world stage.

I say with profound, deep sadness that on May 1st, 2022, his family and the Oromo nation lost this incredible, extraordinary human being, a legend to generations after him, a national hero, a voice that cannot be replaced. It is very hard to put into words the deep sadness and pain I feel about this loss. It is a loss felt deeply and worldwide. The Oromo nation weeps. Our hearts are broken.

Dr. Taddesse dedicated and sacrificed his entire life to freeing and liberating his people. May his sacrifices live on in all of us. He was also incredibly humble, gentle, profound with his words, and an unshakeable optimist about the forthcoming freedom of Oromia. He also paid attention to younger people, he made us feel important and part of the struggle. He always spoke to me so kindly and so lovingly, and encouraged me throughout my youth.

May we all cherish every moment, every encounter and every influence of the legendary Dr. Taddeese. May we all continue the struggle he sacrificed his life to build the foundation for.

May he Rest in Eternal Peace.

THE OROMO DIHASPORA VISITED KENIYA REFELECTIONS ON.

“Who we are as a people is infinitely complex. I am talking about the Oromo, of course, but I think I’m also talking about us all. If I have learned anything over the past year and seven months, it is that I will only ever keep living and reliving this one truth: people, their stories, and their lived realities are not linear, rigid, or made to be easily and simply comprehended. Life exists on a continuum of relationships and storytelling. I want to remain willing to relate to who people are, as they are, rather than clinging onto what I have constructed of a people through imagination, hearsay, and the effects of groupthink.” Read more at: https://www.theelephant.info/op-eds/2022/04/22/a-diasporan-oromo-visits-kenya-a-reflection/?fbclid=IwAR10kMrgNgv2BIT6UZW0dGuwBoJvPr2Y_DF1jnLn_Fc3FLj6oUFg0gKSBx4#.YmM2ZklBDSg.facebook The Elephant - Speaking truth to power.
