Belgium is considering recognising the state of Palestine, Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation Caroline Janez said in an interview.
“Palestinians and Israelis alike have the right to live in peace, to live in security,” she added, stressing other European Union member states like Spain are considering following suit.
The State of Palestine was officially proclaimed on November 15, 1988, by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), claiming state sovereignty of the now-besieged Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and occupied East Jerusalem.
In 2012, Palestine became a non-member observer state at the UN, sharing this status with only the Holy See of the Vatican City, which also recognised the State of Palestine in 2015.
As of November 2023, it has been recognised by 139 of the UN’s 193 member states.
The 54 countries that don’t recognise Palestine as a state include Armenia, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.
